Adult Mental Health First Aid:

Enhance your confidence in providing initial support to adults facing mental health challenges or substance misuse issues and learn how to connect them with the right resources. Certified instructors at UConn Extension offer the Mental Health First Aid course from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. This training involves two hours of self-directed online study followed by a six-hour live virtual session.  Participants will engage in activities and practice support techniques during the course. Upon successful completion, an online certificate will be provided.

One to two weeks prior to the instructor-led session(s), registrants will receive an email with instructions for accessing the self-paced online component.

    When:

    new: January 15, 2025 (12:45 PM - 4:00 PM) and January 16, 2025 (8:45 AM - 12:00 PM) - two days, 3 1/4 hr. each day, virtual training

    full: January 7, 2025 (9:30 AM- 4:00 PM) - One full day (6 1/2 hrs.) virtual training

    Description

    Building mental health literacy among university faculty, staff, students, and outreach and extension personnel strengthens a safer, more supportive campus and community environment. Early recognition and response to mental health concerns can prevent crises, bolster morale, and improve both academic and work performance. Who Should Take This Course? This course is beneficial for anyone in the university community who may encounter mental health challenges in their work or interactions. Key groups who would benefit include:
    • - Professors and Teaching Assistants - Campus Health Services Personnel - Residence Life Staff- Student Leaders - Peer Mentors
    • - Faculty and Staff in Outreach and Extension - Academic Advisors and Counselors - Student Affairs Professionals - Campus Security
    • - Any student or employee interested in mental health advocacy
    Our Mental Health First Aid training is evidence based, offering insight into identifying mental health challenges, responding to mental health emergencies, and debunking common myths.
